The Dion No. 3 is a small bodied guitar, with a shape designed to maximize the sound producing area. This is accomplished by moving the sound hole up towards the neck joint and bringing the narrowest point of the waist out and up. It ends up looking vaguely dreadnaught like and has the effect of loosening the waist, allowing an area that is often tight to be a more active contributor to the amount of air moved and thus sound produced. This, coupled with the 13th fret body joint which puts the bridge in the centre of sound producing area of the top creates a warm, even sounding guitar with great volume.

This guitar boasts a number of uncommon design elements standard on all Dion Guitars:

The neck is a fully bolted straight mortis and tenon including a bolt on fingerboard extension. Contrary to popular belief a glued neck joint isn't actually a tighter neck joint. When glueing a wood joint one needs to leave room for the wood to swell once the glue is applied . With a bolted neck joint, a perfect wood to wood joint can be made, with the added benefit of easy neck resets down the road. This neck also has a shop-made carbon fibre u-rod running the length of the neck and into the headstock, stiffening and stabilizing the neck and a beautiful, stainless steel, double action truss rod made by luthier Mark Blanchard.

The Back is made from four layers of wood in alternating grain orientation with a core of nomex, this design allows me to create a very evenly stiff, very active back contributing greatly to the tone and projection of this guitar

The Sides: Constructed from three layers of wood, the centre being kerfed to lighten and make bendable. These sides create a very stiff, very stable rim, taking some of the load off of the top allowing me to lighten the soundboard, creating more potential for sound production.

These structural elements make the guitar about 10% heavier than conventionally made guitars, but create a stable instrument that is very responsive and built light in all the appropriate places.
